Grid girls light up race too
| By Lin Xinyi | |
| WORKING out, going for facials and consuming lots of Vitamin C.
These are just some of the things that the SingTel grid girls have been doing to prepare themselves for the inaugural SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. The 44 lasses are pulling out all the stops to ensure that they will be looking their best when they don the outfits that expose their midriffs. 'I think the outfit brings out the best in me,' said 19-year-old Eloise Tan, who has been doing sit-ups, crunches and hula-hoop exercises to keep in shape. But it is not just their bodies that they are spending their time on. Their faces are getting a fair bit of attention too. Lin Siqi, 22, said: 'I used to make fun of people who moisturised their faces. Now, I'm doing just that.' Organisers are also doing their bit to make sure the girls light up the world's first night Formula One race. The grid girls attended a one-day workshop where they learnt how to put on make-up, pose, shake hands and walk with poise. But Esther Yeo insisted that the grid girls, mostly students whose ages range from 18 to 26, are not just about appearances. The 22-year-old said: 'People think we're bimbotic but I don't think so. We have beauty and brains.' The Singapore Institute of Management undergraduate added that the grid girls are friendly and approachable, and will be bringing their personalities to the table. While the spotlight is due to shine on the girls over the three days beginning Sept 26, many have already gotten their 15 minutes of fame. They have been busy with media interviews and photo-shoots, while 20 of them starred in the reality TV show seeking to find the top grid girl. Already, most have experienced what it is like to have hairstylists and make-up artists fussing over them. Lin said: 'Everybody likes attention. I'm no different.' But ultimately, it is the chance to make history that is the biggest draw for them. On race days, they are tasked with guiding the drivers to their respective hot wheels. And on the night of the race itself, they will guide the race cars to their positions on the grid. It is a role they take great pride in. Tan, who has modelled in car and bike shows, said: 'This is definitely at the top of my CV. We're talking about F1 - the race queens of all race queens. 'This means we've got to be better - more verbal and presentable.' And if you are still not sure what the Singapore Grand Prix means to the girls, just ask Seraphina Chin. The 19-year-old reckons that it is more important to look good on the starting grid, than on one's wedding day. She said: 'A wedding involves just you, your family and friends. 'But for the F1, the whole world will be watching.' | |
