General attitude of Singaporeans appalling
| I READ Mr Paul Jacob's article last Saturday ('Can't treat them right? Ban maids'), and couldn't agree more. It is appalling how some Singaporeans treat their maids but our general attitude towards them is just as appalling.
Mr Jacob says that we see maids not as people who help us but people to order around to clean and pick up after us. This seems to be so. In the early hours of the morning, it is not uncommon to see maids waiting with children for the school bus and seeing them off while their parents are presumably sleeping. Singaporeans fought hard for a five-day work week. So why do our Indonesian maids have only one day off a month? We want a well-paying job but why do we pay our maids so miserably? Maids may be paid well by their standards but we should measure their pay by ours as they are working here. How gracious does that make us? Wong Jock Onn | |
