Apparently trivial...
'Why does it take a civilian to point out the security threats of an illegally parked vehicle in front of the Civil Defence building and spend at least 20 minutes educating the civil defence staff about security?'

MR CHARLES QUAH: 'Last Sunday, I noticed a scooter parked illegally in front of the Central Fire Station in Hill Street. As it was a potential security threat, I informed a Singapore Civil Defence Force staff member in the guardroom. His initial response was that it was not a problem. His nonchalance was disturbing, so I spoke to his duty officer. The duty officer cited similar precedents, of which there had been no untoward incidents. To his credit, he admitted the scooter posed a security threat and agreed to call the police. But the owner of the scooter rode off before the police arrived.'

SO, WHOSE BUCK IS IT?

'This is completely unacceptable for the ERP system.'

DR LIM BOON HEE: 'The problem is clear - about 300 motorists every month are irked at having to pay penalties of up to $10 each time they pass Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries and deductions are not made from the cashcard in their In-vehicle Unit (IU). And what about the subsequent finger-pointing and pass-the-buck exercise? The Land Transport Authority are blaming it on a batch of 'defective' CashCards but Nets claims an incompatibility problem between IUs and CashCards. Others now blame the gantries. Yet, Singapore's competition commission allows Nets to keep the unrefunded $5, based on some future competition down the road...when there is no competition now.'

A GUY WHO KNOWS HIS WHITES

'Either schools relax their rules, or shoe manufacturers provide more options for white shoes.'

MR KELVIN ONG: 'Schools require students' shoes to be entirely white, with no brand logos in colour or colour strips. So far, there are only a few brands of white shoes and they are all very poor quality vinyl ones with non-orthopaedic support. The soles peel off within a few months; the coated white colour vinyl is easily ripped off when children sit on the rough school parade-square floor; and poor quality Velcro fasteners lose their grip in no time. I have searched shoe shops and major sports shops and found no better options; Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Puma - they all have their logos clearly visible.'

REVIVE ANTI-LITTERING CAMPAIGN

'Summon the wardens. There are black sheep among us.'

MS JESSICA HO: 'Ask the cleaners how many times they have to clear away these items from our MRT platforms and trains in a single day. Mineral water bottles and snack wrappers on the benches, facial blotters on the floor and newspapers on the parapet. Commuters even eat and drink in the trains and stations. It is time we actively revive the no-littering campaign; get moving before littering becomes a habit. Otherwise, summon the wardens. There are black sheep among us.'
