| WORKERS TOO...
'Construction workers should be bussed, with seat belts.' DR IVAN CHAN, who thinks we should also consider foreign workers. He thinks focusing on industrial safety without considering safety during transport is a crime. 'So what if deaths during transport don't count as 'industrial'?' he asks ... AND BIGGER BUSES 'The mandatory seat-belt proposal covers only mini-school buses and not bigger school buses.' MS CHENG MAY SAN. Although the reason given was that bigger buses can absorb shocks better in an accident, she urges the Land Transport Authority to reconsider its initial proposal BLAME TEACHERS... 'The main reason school bus drivers are in a rush is that school teachers are not punctual in dismissing students.' MR COLIN ONG. Teachers should be more sympathetic to the plight of bus drivers and the safety of students by dismissing students punctually, he says ....AND DRIVING STANDARDS 'There is a greater need to address the standard of driving in Singapore.' MR JAMES MYLES, who thinks the current level of fines is not effective and a more punitive regime is required to eradicate poor driving ENGAGE SAFETY-ORIENTED OPERATORS 'If minibus operators cannot provide seat belts, it is the school's responsibility to engage other operators willing to do so.' MRS SUSAN VERONICA YEO BETTER THAN NOTHING 'Across-the-waist seat belts, while not as effective as the across-the-shoulder type, will serve the purpose of restricting movement on the bus.' MS CILER GAZI, noting that these seat belts will not change the seating ratio and operators will have to pay only for their installation | |
