Don't stop at seat belts for school buses
I READ with astonishment Sunday's front-page headline, 'MPs to push for new law on seat belts in school buses'.

The use of seat belts is not in question. What is, is the reason for this sudden impulse by Members of Parliament to enact a law on their use.

Why have school buses gone for years without this law?

Why the omission on safety of schoolchildren? Does it take a death to open the eyes of MPs?

I always thought MPs are paid to trouble shoot, to see disaster before it occurs.

My astonishment is predicated on the inability to see and act until a life is lost.

If we go on the axiom that one death is one too many, how about pushing for the protection of labourers sitting at the back of lorries?

Do we also have to wait until death occurs before there is a rush to enact a law?

May I point out that, besides lorries which ferry workers, there are also buses which, by the law of momentum, are also prone to the death factor, as the law of physics exempts no one.

Will we see the same rush to enact laws when other deaths occur?

Seat belts on school buses are belated, but better late than never.

What is being done about lorries, pickups, buses and vans which ferry people?
