Newborns: Reasonable plea that's worth addressing
MS RENE Neo made a reasonable plea ('Cover all newborn Singaporeans, please', April 12). The reply by the Health Ministry published in the Forum page four days later does not address the issue of 'newborns'.

Every child who is born into this world is at the time of his birth a 'newborn'. The decision whether or not to abort a child has tremendous emotional, social and moral implications, and advice on this matter should not be given lightly over the telephone.

There are several instances worldwide where alarmists have predicted that an unborn infant would be disabled. They have often been proved incorrect. Also, some initially healthy babies have later developed special needs.

There is much covert as well as overt discrimination concerning children with special needs in Singapore. Despite this, they and their parents have shown remarkable resilience and many have worked hard and excelled in the situations in which they have found themselves.

Let us not forget their academic as well as sporting achievements, bringing glory to this country. Those who manage to secure the humblest employment are usually the most loyal employees.

There must surely must be a better way to address this problem of escalating health costs. Indeed, costs are escalating in most areas of everyday living.

There is much talk of the 'many-helping-hands' approach. It is time to put head, heart and hands together to give every child the chance to live and prove he can help himself.
