Association wants to help bridge the Indian divide
| I COMMEND Dr Shashi Tharoor on his perceptive article 'Doing away with them and us' (March 28).
He has raised an important issue: the perceived divide between settled Indians and recently arrived Indians in Singapore. This issue is on the minds of the Indian community in this country. I believe that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who arrived here recently do not choose to stay apart from settled Indians but do not interact sufficiently with them because of the absence of a common platform to take part in social and other activities. To address this gap, the 85-year-old Singapore Indian Association (IA) has rejuvenated itself, beginning with the renovation of its premises in Balestier Road. We offer an extended range of social programmes and sporting activities designed to attract people with varying interests. NRIs are most welcome to join us, participate in the affairs of the community, and through that, plug into the larger community of Singapore. M. V. Rajendran | |
