Private clubs should have code of conduct
I SEEK clarification if there is a code of conduct covering private clubs (for example, golf, social and recreation clubs), as there is for charitable organisations.

There have been reports of members of private clubs in disagreement with each other. Such incidents, where club money is spent defending against lawsuits, are apparently rather common. Presumably, more such incidents have gone unreported.

The problem of alleged breaches of club rules in governance is of concern, not just to club members but also the public. Members of the public will appreciate stricter governance and audit standards in both member-owned and proprietary clubs so would-be members are protected from wrong-doings. Members, too, will benefit from such a code which ensures only responsible and accountable members are elected to committees.

Consequently, such a code will help in the development of a world-class recreational environment in Singapore in its progress to become a global city.
