HUNT FOR MAS SELAMAT
Checkpoint queues? Think national safety
AS A Singaporean, I was disheartened by Mr Arthur Lim Teck Meng's contribution last Saturday, 'Tell public when life will return to normal', in which he proposed that the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority 'release a joint statement to inform all Singaporeans when normal checking procedures will be resumed at both checkpoints'.

It might have been a reasonable proposal, until I read that he 'had to cancel hotel bookings in KL' and had no wish to 'spend two to three hours stuck in a jam'.

The same day, there was a letter by Ms Goh Jee Mee, 'Uniform salute'', praising our men in green and blue as they perform their thankless task of locking down search areas, under the blazing sun, on wet days or cold nights.

I saw them while driving past Mandai, manning their posts at the edge of the forested areas, having their meals where they were and not leaving their posts until relieved.

At a time when we should close ranks, perhaps Mr Lim can reflect on the hardships our sons, brothers, neighbours, and anyone else involved in the hunt for Mat Selamat Kastari, are experiencing out there. I am sure they have family and friends with whom they would rather spend their precious weekends. Perhaps then, Mr Lim may realise that not being able to go on holiday is not such an ordeal after all.
