Price hikes: Oil firms should speak up
I REFER to Mr Benjamin Tay's letter last Thursday, 'Pump prices - eight hikes in eight months'.

I agree with him that the numerous hikes since July last year are a cause for worry. However, on the world stage, the rise in crude oil prices has also been scary.

I don't know how much the rise in crude oil prices and concerns in the United States about fuel shortage really affect petroleum companies and their overheads, but I hope these companies are not taking the opportunity to increase their profits, all the while passing it off as 'inevitable' or 'due to inflation'.

While I do not drive as much as those in the sales or transport industries, my petrol bill has gone up by more than $10 a week. Petrol stations no longer give big discounts and it does seem like a cartel, as Mr Tay put it.

I would like the petroleum companies to give their view on this.
