Many ways to reach Singaporeans overseas
| I WOULD like to thank Madam Tan Gek Kim for her comments in her letter, 'Govt gestures mean a lot to S'poreans abroad' on Saturday.
It was heartening to note that Madam Tan had enjoyed close interactions with Ambassador Tommy Koh and his wife in the past. Madam Tan might have read accounts in the media how the late Mr David Marshall, when he was ambassador, also made it a point to meet Singaporeans when they travelled to places he was assigned. Our missions overseas are keeping to this time-honoured tradition of reaching out, meeting and interacting with Singaporeans overseas. This is done in various ways, including newsletters and regular gatherings, such as National Day celebrations. The Government has established the Overseas Singaporean Unit to coordinate and drive more initiatives across various agencies to reach out to Singaporeans who are based overseas and to connect them back to home. Through the Overseas Singaporean Portal (www.overseassingaporean.sg), Singaporeans overseas can keep abreast of news and developments in Singapore, be updated on events and activities organised by the Overseas Singaporean Unit and other agencies, as well as link up with fellow Singaporeans around the world. Finally, to assist us in our outreach efforts, we would like to take this opportunity to encourage all Singaporeans overseas to e-register at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website www.mfa.gov.sg.
