OUTRAM MRT SHOOTING
Officer had no choice, say police
|
|
| POLICE refer to letters in the Forum page this week regarding the incident last Thursday when an officer opened fire at Outram Park MRT station ('Knife-wielding suspect shot dead at MRT station', March 7).
Officers face different types of situations, ranging from those of a non-life threatening nature to those where lives are at risk. As with law enforcement officers in other countries, making appropriate decisions regarding the use of force is the most critical challenge confronting our officers. We assure the public our officers are constantly reminded of the heavy responsibility that comes with bearing firearms. Our guiding principle is that it shall be in accordance with the law and, under the law, no more force should be used than is necessary for the accomplishment of a lawful purpose. We are trained on the various options of force, such as unarmed combat, baton, stun gun and firearms, and when to use each option, according to the perceived threat posed to officers and the public. In this instance, the armed and dangerous suspect approached the officer in a threatening manner at close proximity. In the circumstances, considering there was imminent danger of death or grievous hurt, the officer had no choice but to open fire. We thank readers for their feedback and support. Readers respond to Mr Juergen Fechner, who wrote that police use of a firearm in a crowded MRT station was 'reckless and irresponsible'. WHAT KNIVES CAN DO 'A knife in close combat is extremely dangerous. In America, law enforcement agencies have demonstrated repeatedly that an assailant seven metres from a cadet with a holstered training weapon can reach - and cut - the cadet before he can draw, much less fire.'
HUANG JUN JIEK
FATAL HINDSIGHT 'We do not need to witness a day when an assailant kills an officer, after which we suggest he should have used his firearm.'
HOONG SIEW CHOO (MS)
THIS ISN'T THE MOVIES 'Mr Fechner seems to believe they should possess the fighting skills of Jet Li or Bruce Willis.'
