Cabbies concerned over difficulties
| WE REFER to media reports and letters to the Forum page regarding the recent implementation of rules on taxis stopping at taxi stands and taxi stops in the Central Business District (CBD) from March 1.
We are very concerned about recent developments arising from the new rule. As leaders of the Taxi Operators' Associations are taxi drivers, we have similarly been affected by the new Land Transport Authority (LTA) ruling and understand very well the feelings of our fellow taxi drivers. We understand and support the good intention behind the new rule in enhancing the safety of commuters, taxi drivers and other road users. We have also received much feedback. Some issues raised, such as insufficient taxi stands and stops in the CBD and lack of taxi stands and stops outside some hotels in the CBD, caused practical operational difficulties for drivers and misunderstandings and unpleasant incidents between drivers and their passengers. We have compiled feedback and are working closely with the LTA to address these operational issues which can be resolved quickly. As for other issues which require more time, such as building more taxi stands at hotels and government buildings in the CBD, we will work with the LTA and taxi companies through the joint working group to address them.
