Private gymnastic clubs offer quality programmes
| I WAS a member of the women's artistic gymnastics team that won the historic Team Gold at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila and I would like to help Ms Chia Tian Gei, who wrote the letter, 'Children's gym class cancelled - Continuity needed in keep-fit programmes' (ST, Feb 9).
Gymnastics is a sport that builds character, poise, strength and agility. As a strong believer in 'gymnastics for all', I was greatly heartened to read about Ms Chia's daughter's interest in gymnastics. May I offer a solution to her problem? Other than the Singapore Sports Council's Learn To Play gymnastic programme, there are many other private gymnastic clubs in Singapore, offering quality programmes to suit different needs. Check the website of the national sports association, Singapore Gymnastics, at www.gymnastics.sg. There is a list of clubs affiliated to the national sports association under 'About SG'. In order for Singapore to achieve its dream of a Sporting Nation, it is important that we 'get them young'. Especially for a sport like gymnastics, where perfection in skills is key, it is imperative to start training at a really young age, like Ms Chia's daughter who is seven. It would be a shame if continuity becomes a problem and Singapore sports loses a possible bright spark.
