Duplicate services on popular bus routes
RECENTLY, Transport Minister Raymond Lim spoke about increased competition for bus operators in the coming years. Bus services will be allowed to duplicate MRT routes.

I would like to urge further improvement of the transport network by duplicating services on popular bus routes.

SBS service 151 - plying between Hougang Central and Kent Ridge - is a case in point. Very often, the buses are packed to the brim and, to make things worse, they often arrive back to back - so missing them means waiting for about half an hour for the next.

This problem of buses arriving back to back is not due to traffic jams as this often happens right after Kent Ridge terminal.

I would like to suggest that SMRT be allowed to operate additional bus routes from the north and Kallang to Kent Ridge. Currently, students from these areas take more than 90 minutes to reach the National University of Singapore. And some have to make multiple transfers.

SMRT could operate a new service to duplicate service 151. It can even be a peak-period service.
