LIQUIDS THAT CAN BE PLACED IN HAND-CARRIED LUGGAGE
Larger containers allowed only for medical reasons
I REFER to the letter by Mr George Campbell, 'Be flexible with contact lens solution on planes' (ST, Jan 21).

Since May 8 last year, strict aviation-security measures have been implemented to regulate the amounts of liquids, aerosols and gels that can be placed in hand-carried luggage to be brought on board an aircraft.

Liquids, aerosols and gels must be in containers with a capacity of 100ml or less each and placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a capacity not exceeding one litre.

These measures are in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation's recommendations, made after the reported United Kingdom aviation terror plot in August 2006.

Other than Australian airports, most other airports, such as London Heathrow and Hong Kong, have not exempted contact-lens solution from these restrictions and require that such solution be stored in containers with a capacity of 100ml or less each.

Nevertheless, if there are medical reasons to use certain solutions that are available only in containers with a capacity of more than 100ml and cannot be transferred to smaller containers, we will allow such solutions to be brought on board an aircraft after appropriate screening.

A doctor's letter or other documents will be useful to facilitate the verification process.
