Act now for a greener transport sector
I READ with great interest the planned revamp of Singapore's public-transport system, and the formation of an inter-ministerial committee on sustainable development.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations, by 2030 energy use and greenhouse-gas emissions from transport are predicted to be 80 per cent higher than current levels. This will have serious implications for the global climate and the energy security of nations, including Singapore.

To ensure a greener and more energy-efficient transport sector in Singapore, the authorities need to act now. This may be achieved, for example, by having electric, hybrid or flexi-fuel public buses. Also, car owners need to be better educated on the benefits of fuel-efficient vehicles.

The Government is clearly committed to keeping urban congestion in check, minimising environmental impact and improving the overall quality of life.

Our ability to solve these problems will not only benefit us but also allow Singapore to be part of, and potentially play a leadership role in, something much bigger than itself.
