Errant shopkeepers face enforcement action
| I REFER to the letter, 'Fire checks: Don't let up during festive season' (ST, Jan 21), by Mr Alex Ang Chung Chung.
In November last year, Ang Mo Kio-Yio Chu Kang Town Council issued an advisory letter to all shopkeepers regarding the guidelines on outdoor display areas (ODAs). The letters were served together with ODA posters produced in conjunction with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Housing Board (HDB), National Environment Agency (NEA) and Federation of Merchants' Associations, Singapore. Besides raising awareness through educational materials, the town council is also conducting regular checks and joint enforcement exercises together with HDB, SCDF and NEA. This is to ensure that shops comply with the ODA guidelines. With regard to the shops at Ang Mo Kio Central Block 702, the town council has been conducting inspection checks, and has served verbal and written warnings to shops that are found not in compliance with the guidelines. A final round of written notices had also been issued, after which we will take enforcement action against recalcitrant cases. We thank Mr Ang for his feedback. Please be assured that the town council will continue to intensify checks and enforcement to ensure the proper use of the ODA by the shopkeepers. We would also like to urge shopkeepers to cooperate with the town council and comply with the ODA guidelines in the interest of public safety. Michelle Lim (Ms) | |
