Radio DJs made tasteless remark on cats
I AM writing with regard to the Class 95 FM Morning Express Show by Glenn Ong and the Flying Dutchman last Wednesday. They were discussing stray cats in Singapore.

However, they made mistakes in their conversation. One said stray cats should be sent to Peru to be eaten and stray cat feeders should be fined. I would like to stress that these comments should be strongly discouraged as they are misleading and send an immoral message to the public.

Responsible stray cat feeders clear up after feeding and pose no inconvenience to the public. Those who leave food lying around are usually the ones who feed not out of love of strays, but because they feel it would be a waste to discard their leftover food. They usually do not sterilise stray cats and do not take them to the vet when they are sick. They also do not handle complaints like responsible stray cat feeders.

Responsible stray cat feeders are eager to work with the town councils when there is a problem regarding stray cats. Culling is not an effective way to deal with the problem. Hence, responsible and compassionate stray cat feeders should not be condemned as a whole.

To solve problems effectively, unhappy residents who know of any irresponsible stray cat feeders should inform other responsible stray cat feeders or the Cat Welfare Society, and they will help to solve the problem.

India's Mahatma Gandhi said: 'The moral standards and the prosperity of a nation would be reflected by how much love its people give the animals.' Thus, comments that animals should be sent to another country to be eaten are irresponsible and inhumane.

First, I want to highlight the fact that humans consume meat to survive. We should not 'overeat'. Consumption of animals like cats and dogs should not be advocated because we do not need to eat them to survive.

I hope the DJs will be more responsible when airing their views on radio in future.
