NUS clarifies admission criteria
I REFER to the online letter, 'Lecturer belittles 'weak' poly student at NUS open house' on Wednesday. We are sorry to hear that Ms Ong had an unpleasant experience during her visit to the National University of Singapore (NUS) Open House.

We would like to assure Ms Ong and all readers that NUS welcomes students from all educational backgrounds. Admission to NUS is largely based on academic merit. We also admit up to 10 per cent of students under the category of discretionary admission. The Life Sciences Programme admits between 400 and 500 students each year and not 50 as understood by Ms Ong. Over the years, the programme has seen a fair number of polytechnic students gaining admission and who went on to successfully graduate. We have since contacted Ms Ong to address her concerns.

Professor Andrew Wee

Dean, Faculty of Science
