Singapore Malays do not need an NEP to favour them
YOUR report yesterday, 'Don't fan racial flames, Abdullah warns', is igniting a spark in this Singaporean. Abdul Aziz Tapa, a veteran of Malaysian political party Umno, while hitting at the Malaysian Malays at their own backyard, took a dig at Singapore politics. He was reported to have added 'it was not inconceivable that what had happened to the Malays in Singapore could happen to Malays in Malaysia if DAP (Malaysia's opposition Democratic Action Party) eventually controlled the whole country'.

It is a well known fact that Singapore has a meritocratic government. No one is being marginalised just because he belongs to a certain racial or ethnic group. In fact, the rights of the minorities are protected and enshrined in the Constitution. Their interests are represented in the government by their Members of Parliament through the Group Representation Constituency (GRC). There is no longer any need or necessity for the Singapore Government to explain our meritocratic rule of governance to her people.

Singapore Malays do not need to have the benefits of a New Economic Policy (NEP) to favour them. They can hold their heads high as they compete with the rest of Singaporeans on a level playing field. Their achievement is through their own sheer determination and hard work. The reactions of our politicians to the shocking election result are most encouraging. They see the need to draw lessons and avoid the pitfalls. Letters from the man in the street to your forum page also advise our government to do likewise. This is most heartening.
