Why do recycling trucks come by less often now?
I WAS especially heartened when, a few years ago, residents of my private estate along Upper Serangoon Road were provided with recycling bins from SembWaste. As a parent of two school-going children, I actively encourage them to separate recyclable materials from our household waste. At the end of one week, it is not uncommon for us to fill our recycling bin.

However, it has come to my notice that the recycling trucks plying our estate seem to be making their rounds less frequently. Instead of coming around every two weeks as they used to, there is sometimes a lag of three, or even four weeks. Needless to say, our recycling bin has been overflowing and we have had to resort to putting our recyclables in our neighbours' bins late at night, when they are asleep.

On both occasions, when I called the customer service hotline, I was assured that the trucks still follow a two weekly schedule, even as my overstuffed bin attested to the contrary. I was also given the assurance that an officer would call me up to clarify the situation. I am still waiting for that elusive call.

I wonder if any residents in other private estates have encountered the same lack of service. It would be a shame if people give up recycling because their local waste collection company does not seem interested in collecting their recyclable trash.
