A Demonstration Corner will give greater vibrancy to society
I REFER to Monday's letter by Mr Chua Sheng Yang, 'Demos at Speakers' Corner? No, they could hurt S'pore'. As Singaporeans become more educated, wanting a greater say in the development of the government, the opening up of public participation channels has become inevitable. We should, first of all, welcome the Government's consideration for demonstrations to be allowed in a confined area that can be controlled. We should also rid ourselves of a 'crisis mentality'' mindset; that holding demonstrations will lead to chaos and riots.

Demonstrations in many mature and developed countries today are peaceful and and non-violent. It is also a display of public opinion by certain groups of Singaporeans seeking to create awareness and interest on various issues. Public peace will be minimised when demonstrations are held in a confined, controllable space.

True, there are feedback outlets now for Singaporeans to voice their concerns. But the flow of information can be in a top-down manner. There can be more room for debate and to create awareness which can only improve Singapore.

Singapore today has achieved First World standards, especially in wealth and economic growth. The natural question now is: 'What next''? 'What next' means a greater say in the public or national policies which affect the daily lives of Singaporeans.

Singaporeans want to play a greater role in determining the development of the country. This will, in turn, generate a greater sense of belonging to the country.

A 'demonstration'' corner will offer greater vibrancy and diversity.
