Train overran station due to technical fault
| I REFER to the letter, 'MRT train failed to stop at station' by Leong Soon Hoong (ST, Jan 22).
We would like to share that our trains travel on an automated mode, and are programmed to stop correctly within tolerance limits. However, as with other mechanical systems, technical hitches may occur. For example, the momentum of the train and conditions of the track may cause trains to overrun. Nonetheless, a strict maintenance regime is in place to ensure that technical faults are kept to a minimum. If a train overruns a station by a limited distance (setback limit), the train officer may reverse the train to allow for passenger boarding and alighting, subject to strict control by the Operations Control Centre. However, if the train had travelled beyond the setback limit, it will be driven in the normal direction of travel to proceed to the next station. With regard to Mr Leong's experience at Khatib MRT Station, we would like to explain that the train had overrun the station due to a technical fault. As the distance exceeded was beyond the setback limit, it proceeded to Yishun MRT Station. We would like to assure Mr Leong that we have in place sufficient safety measures to ensure that our trains operate in a safe and efficient manner.
