MRT train frequency - public interest should come first
| I REFER to the letters in the forum pages concerning the frequency of MRT trains and I agree with the comments made by the writers.
My personal observation is that the frequency of trains during peak hours is wholly unsatisfactory. The situation at the north-bound platform at Raffles Place MRT during the times that I travel, that is, between 6.30pm and 8pm, is invariably overcrowded. The current intervals (for the North-bound trains) are inadequate as not only does the station have to cope with the passenger load from office workers in the vicinity but also with the commuters transferring from the East-West line. I am glad to note that additional trains will be added to address overcrowding issues. If cost-cutting and shareholder value-enhancement was the reason for not doing this earlier, I would urge the SMRT to pause, reflect and remind itself that notwithstanding the fact that the company is run on a commercial basis, the pursuit of profits should be moderated by the public interest it has to serve.
