Ex-Indonesian leader a man of determination and grit
| AS A person who has met Mr Suharto on a professional basis, I would like to set the record straight and give some insights into the man.
Among his first words to me was that people say he was pretending. Unspoken but the message through his proud eyes was clear. He was a general and had ruled over 200 million people for 32 years, having faced all sorts of adversaries and adversities. He did not crawl and hide under the bed with excuses when faced with corruption charges. Mr Suharto went through the neurological examination and neurophysiological tests with great effort, determination and grit. I can categorically say this. Yes, Mr Suharto had a significant stroke which compromised his mental faculties. There is no doubt in my mind that if he was fully fit he would have faced whatever charges against him standing up with head held high. Dr Lee Kheng Hin | |
