MRT escalator speed is necessary to facilitate passenger movement and reduce congestion
| I REFER to the letter, 'Consider slowing down escalator speeds at MRT stations for the elderly' by Ms Loy Siew Joon (Online forum, Jan 9).
The escalators at MRT stations are designed to internationally-accepted high safety standards to transport high volumes of passengers safely and quickly. While these escalators move at 0.75 metre per second, which is 1.5 times faster than the speed of escalators found in shopping malls, the faster speed is necessary to facilitate passenger movement and reduce congestion. For passengers' safety, we take this opportunity to advise them to exercise caution by holding the handrails and to hold children by the hand when using escalators at the MRT stations. The elderly and parents with young children in strollers are encouraged to use the lifts and ramps which are being installed at the stations progressively. We thank Ms Loy for her suggestion.
