There seems to be two standards - one for maids and another for parents

| WHY do there seem to be two standards - one for maids and another for parents?
There have been many letters about the recent tragic death of a baby while being bathed by its maid. But I, for one, am not going to disagree with a judge who heard all aspects of the case. If he says it was an accident, it was, although some seem to think that they know better than him. However, there was also another tragic death of a four-year-old in a swimming pool while in the care of his mother. But I do not see any letters written about this case. Why? Could it be that Singaporeans expect perfection only from maids, but recognise that for others this is not possible? It is so easy to complain about someone who cannot argue back. At the end of the day, you have to provide a maid with the resources to safely look after her charges and if you don't you can't blame her if something goes wrong. As parents we, and no one else, are responsible for the safety of our children - at all times. We cannot abdicate parenting to maids, as some seem to think they can. If they don't want to look after their children, why have them in the first place? Bathing a child is one of the most lovely parenting experiences. Let my maid do it? Never. Duncan Edwards | |
