Unsavoury comments on actress' physical size: MediaCorp should convey right message to the public
I WAS watching Channel 8 a few days ago when I saw an advertisement for the variety show, 'The Essential Lunar New Year Guide 2008'.

The advertisements showed excerpts from the show in which there were comments directed at one of the actresses due to her physical size. This is, in fact, not the first time that I have seen an advertisement of similar content regarding this particular show.

What greatly disturbed me was that such uncouth comments and behaviour was supposed to come across as a joke.

How can we condone such superficial comments and behaviour? The media is the main source of influence in modern society, thus it is important for the media to be selective in the content of its programmes and make sure that correct values are sent out.

This advertisement is aired during the prime-time slot which means it would be viewed by many, in particular, young children who are susceptible to such ideas.

Do we want the younger generation to grow being superficial beings? No one should be discriminated against because of his/her outlook, thus it is important that the media convey the right message to the public.

Thus, I urge MediaCorp to look into this matter seriously and take note of the social consequences that programmes aired on television might bring.

This is definitely not a case of over-reaction as it concerns the future values of our society.
