Look into 'lockdown' system for better crowd control
I REFER to the letter, 'Better crowd control needed at Marina Bay' (ST Forum, Jan 4).

I have been noticing, of late, many news reports on overcrowding at public places during various festivals. The most recent one being the one on New Year celebrations at Marina Bay.

As I was not present at the event, I can only imagine the crowd and mood at the time.

But from my previous experiences in public places during events such as parties held at Orchard Road and National Day Celebrations, I have a suggestion to make.

I believe that the authorities should introduce a system of 'lockdown' where the public areas are sub-divided into sectors and the crowd of one sector is not be allowed to go into another unless it is for the purpose of dispersal, like when the event is over.

Let me explain. As and when a sector becomes full, as determined by the authorities, a 'lockdown' is imposed on the sector so that no more people are allowed in to prevent overcrowding.

This will also help those with tickets, like those at the recent event in Orchard Road, from being blocked by eager crowds who may overflow into their path and thus, obstruct their view.

I believe a better crowd control system like this will go a long way in making future events, including the upcoming F1 Singapore Grand Prix more enjoyable.
