Negative publicity would be detrimental to the cause of Singapore Children's Society
| I REFER to the letter, 'Draw tickets arrived days after the event' (ST, Dec 31), by Mr Richard See Huat Lye.
Often it seems that certain remarks are made on the spur of the moment, without regard for the dire repercussions it could have on the society, or the individuals that make it up. If Mr See had given it more rational thought before making such a gross insinuation, he would realise that there is absolutely no possible way in which even an iota of doubt could be cast on the issue of the people involved keeping the winning tickets for themselves. In fact, after the furore of the NKF and, more recently, the Ren Ci Hospital, does anyone seriously think that such issues, yet again involving mass donations, would not have certified government auditors keeping close track on the money movements? Such negative publicity would only prove detrimental to the cause of the Singapore Children's Society, and who would be the ones who will suffer then? Surely not Mr See. In the first place, what is the intention behind purchasing the donation tickets? To ease a child's burden, or to take a shot at the grand draw? Fund-raising, in itself, is a much maligned and thankless task as it is. We surely do not need such rash and thoughtless accusations thrown at the very people who are working towards giving the less fortunate children of Singapore a better and happier life.
