Leave politics to govts, individuals must do what they can to help victims of the oppressed

| I READ with interest and amusement your article in which MM Lee Kuan Yew labelled a certain bunch of dictators 'dumb generals'.
For a man who chooses his words carefully, this is really telling of the situation in that particular country. I am glad that our MM has weighed in on this particular issue. I just want to share with our readers a paragraph from a Nobel Peace Prize (1986) acceptance speech made by winner Elie Wiesel and also author of the book Night in which he said; 'And then I explain to him how naive we were, that the world did know and remained silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must, at the moment, become the center of the universe.' (from the acceptance speech made by Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel in Oslo 1986) Mr Elie Wiesel's strong words were a result of being a Nazi Holocaust victim who had survived extreme torture and deprivation. I think as individuals in our fortunate society, we can adopt a humanitarian approach and not a political approach. We must do what we can in our own ways to help the victims of the situation and leave the politics to the governments or world bodies. We must let the victims know that at least there are decent human beings who care about their situation and not leave them to suffer on their own. Chris Lee Kay Swee | |
