Youth groups can liaise with SMU to use campus space
| I REFER to the letter, 'SMU should reconsider ban on groups dancing in underground walkway' (Online forum, Aug 1).
We thank the writer, Mr Chong Zhi Xin, for his feedback. The SMU city campus is designed to facilitate interaction between the university and the public. Located at the heart of the civic, arts and heritage district, we encourage and provide opportunities for a seamless and active exchange of ideas and activity with people and the institutions around us. General areas of our campus, such as the underground concourse, have hosted many SMU and community events. A lively artistic and cultural exchange with the community enriches both the lives of our students and the general public. We have therefore always allowed organised activities including arts and dance performances in our open spaces. These same open spaces are used by our SMU students for their co-curricula activities. For practical purposes of co-ordination for effective use of our open spaces, we require youth or other organised groups to liaise with our Office of Facilities Management when they wish to use our spaces for dance performances or other forms of organised activities. We will continue to monitor and manage usage of our concourse and open spaces as necessary to maintain a safe and lively environment on campus for our student activities and for community events.
