Football: Wenger waits for title rivals to stumble
| MANCHESTER - ARSENE Wenger insisted the pressure is on Arsenal's title rivals after his side kept up their Premier League challenge with a 3-1 victory at Manchester City on Saturday.
The Gunners became the first team to win at Eastlands this season thanks to Emmanuel Adebayor's double strike and a fine finish from Eduardo da Silva. It was a convincing display that sent Arsenal three points clear at the top of the table ahead of Manchester United's match at Tottenham later on Saturday. Wenger is certain United and third-placed Chelsea will feel the heat as they try to keep pace with Arsenal. 'We want to enjoy our victory and see what the others do now,' Wenger said. 'What is good is we don't depend on their results. We have done our job for the weekend. Let's see what happens.' Wenger claimed he wanted his team to keep attacking even after City midfielder Gelson brought the hosts within a goal. That cavalier attitude paid off as Adebayor sealed the points with two minutes to go. 'We played most of the game in their half but until you score the third goal you never know,' he said. 'We are not a team who are comfortable when we just defend. Therefore I wanted them to keep attacking. You could see we were a bit in between being cautious and trying to score a third goal,' he said. 'It is hard here because they hadn't lost at home. It's their first defeat. It is always difficult when they have that belief they won't lose.' Only Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo can match Adebayor's form in the Premier League at present. The Togo striker's double took his goal tally for the season to 18, with 11 goals coming in the last eight matches. He admitted he is having the time of his life with the north London club. 'The most important thing is to keep doing a good job and to defend hard with the team,' Adebayor said. 'At the moment I'm just enjoying myself like a little child with the squad.' 'Everyone loves me, the fans love me, the players like me. At the moment I'm scoring and I need to keep on doing that.' While it was City's first home defeat this season, they have now gone four league matches at Eastlands without a win. City manager Sven Goran Eriksson blamed his side's lack of fight in the early stages for surrending their home record. 'Arsenal is good, there is no doubt about that, but we started the game too soft,' Eriksson said. 'We only started to fight with them after that had scored two goals and that is too late.' 'It was too soft and it is not the first time so we have to think about it.' 'We have to work on it because it is important. We have to fight until the end of the season because we want to play in Europe for many reasons. We have to do better.' -- AFP | |
