Smith St market cum food centre re-opens for business
A CHINATOWN market is set to re-open for business on Labour Day, after being upgraded to the tune of S$17.3 million.

The market cum food centre at Blk 335 Smith Street was closed for upgrading two years ago under the National Environment Agency's Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme.

Now, the iconic 25-year-old building's architectural structure is an infusion of Chinese culture with a modern twist.

Small balconies with perforated balustrades decorated with 'ethnic inspired' motifs have been added to the building edges, giving it not only an oriental look but also added space for patrons.

The three-storey market also has more amenities now - 226 cooked food stalls, 277 lock-up stalls and 200 market stalls - and a higher seating capacity of 602 tables, up from the previous 550.

Other new features include elderly and disabled-friendly features such as improved lift and escalator facilities, ramps, and wheelchair-friendly tables.
