S'pore Biennale back in September
|

| GIANT BUGS will be invading Singapore in September. Some 53 larger than life muckworms made of plaster and paint are part of an installation titled Under Magnifying Glass by Vietnamese artist Pham Ngoc Duong, 32.
They will be one of the artworks visitors will get to see at the Singapore Biennale 2008, which will run from Sept 11 to Nov 16. This is the second time that the big contemporary art show is being held. The inaugural show in 2006 coincided with the World Bank/International Monetary Fund meetings held here that year. That show was built around the theme of Belief. Another one-word theme has been picked for the upcoming Biennale - Wonder. The National Arts Council (NAC), which is organising the Biennale, says the theme is about the creation of marvels, riddles and illusions in today's world. Mr Fumio Nanjo, 58, artistic director of the Biennale, said on Wednesday at a press briefing that the giant muckworms fit in with the theme. He said: 'The image is very strong and it will make people wonder why is it here, why is it art or is it even art?' 'While the first interest are the bugs themselves, they draw you into a deeper dialogue. I think they are about life, but other people will draw a very different interpretation.'
