NJC to extend 4-yr integrated programme to 6
By Jane Ng
NATIONAL Junior College will extend its four-year integrated programme by another two years when it takes in students from Secondary 1 next year.

It currently takes in Secondary 3 students who skip the O levels but take the A levels exam after four years.

The move frees up time for students to engage in broader learning experiences since they do not have to sit for the O-level examinations.

The extra two years would give them more time for programme which emphasises character and leadership, said Minister of State(Education) Lui Tuck Yew who made the announcement after visiting the school on Monday.

'A six-year programme would give the school more time, space and freedom to ensure students come in and leave not only with good academic qualifications but also with strong character and values,' he said.

It is the first junior college to extend a four-year integrated programme to six years. The other two, Temasek and Victoria JCs, have not submitted any proposals to extend their programmes, said the Education Ministry.

National JC, which will also introduce a hostel programme next year, will take in 120 to 150 students in Secondary 1, as well as Secondary 3 and Junior College 1 students.

Admissions to Secondary 1 will be based on a combination of Primary School Leaving Examination Results, CCA records, a general ability test and an interview.
