Australian jailed over drugs in Indonesia

| DENPASAR (Indonesia) - AN AUSTRALIAN man was sentenced to five months and fifteen days in jail on Tuesday after he was found guilty of drug consumption by a court on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.
David Bruce Houston, 38, was arrested after police found 3.5 grammes of marijuana during a raid in his rented house in the Kuta tourist district on December 12. 'The defendant has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of drug consumption and sentenced to five months and fifteen days,' judge Ida Bagus Putu Madeg told Denpasar district court. Judge Madeg also ordered the defendant to immediately return to Australia as soon as he completed his jail term to seek treatment for his drug problems. 'The immigration office will handle his repatriation,' judge Madeg told reporters outside the court. After hearing the verdict, Houston told the court that he accepted the judge's decision. Houston is the latest in a string of Australians jailed on drugs charges in Indonesia in recent years. Schapelle Corby, an Australian woman sentenced to 20 years in jail in 2005 for smuggling marijuana into Bali, had her appeal overturned last week. She is housed in the same island prison as the so-called Bali Nine, a gang of Australians convicted of attempting to smuggle heroin from Indonesia to Australia in 2005. -- AFP | |
