Indian court convicts brother of murdering ex-minister

| MUMBAI - A COURT on Monday found the younger brother of late Indian Hindu nationalist party leader and former federal minister Pramod Mahajan guilty of his murder last year.
Judge S.P. Davare found Pravin Mahajan guilty of murder and trespass with intent to commit a serious offence. He is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, with the prosecution pushing for either the death penalty or life behind bars. 'We have the choice of seeking a life sentence or the death penalty. I will reveal my cards tomorrow,' chief prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told reporters. Mr Mahajan stormed into the apartment of his elder brother, a general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former telecommunications minister, and pumped three bullets into his upper body in April last year. 'The court has reached an inescapable conclusion in the case,' the judge ruled in India's commercial hub of Mumbai. Mr Mahajan, who was 56, died of multiple-organ failure 12 days after the shooting - reportedly the culmination of a bitter personal feud and family dispute. The court relied on witness accounts and the victim's own statement made to party leader and brother-in-law Gopinath Munde, while being rushed to hospital. 'In the last few days I knew what was coming my way,' Mr Mahajan said when asked by the judge if he had anything to say. -- AFP | |
