OLYMPICS
Ronaldinho 'ready to quit Barca'
Brazilian paper says he wants to win Olympic gold and is set to defy the club
SAO PAULO (BRAZIL) - RONALDINHO will reportedly break his contract with Barcelona if need be to go to the Olympics.

Brazilian Newspaper O Globo reported on Saturday that the two-time Fifa Player of the Year will tell the Spanish club of his plans to help Brazil win their first Olympic gold medal.

'On Tuesday, Ronaldinho will announce that nothing will keep him away from the Beijing Olympics,' the newspaper said.

'And if Barcelona insist on not allowing him to play, he will break his contract with the Spanish club.

'The first demonstration of his determination will take place on Monday, when he will not report to (Barcelona coach) Josep Guardiola for training.'

The Brazilian Soccer Confederation said on its website that Ronaldinho is in the southern city of Porto Alegre, where he is 'training intensely to play for Brazil in the Beijing Olympics'.

It added that he will hold a news conference in Porto Alegre tomorrow.

Last week, Barcelona said Ronaldinho 'will have to report for training on Monday, the first session of the 2008-09 season'.

'The Olympics do not form part of the official Fifa calendar, and no official decision has ever been made in that respect, so the club is under no obligation to allow its player to travel,' the club said in a statement.

The Brazilian star, who last played on March 9, is under contract with Barcelona but has been linked with transfers to Manchester City and AC Milan.

According to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan are on the verge of securing a deal for the Brazilian playmaker on a two-year contract.

It reported on Saturday that Barca chief Joan Laporta and Milan counterpart Adriano Galliani had agreed a deal for the player.

A fee of about 15 million euros (S$32 million) has been decided by the duo, and the details of an annual 6.5 million euro contract are in place.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is overhauling his ageing squad and Galliani has sought to placate irate supporters with a trophy signing.

He had stated his intent on signing Ronaldinho or Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor.

After being seemingly priced out of a bargain for the Togo striker, Galliani looks set to snare the Brazilian for a relatively economical fee.

It will be a major coup for the 2007 European champions, who are still licking their wounds after failing to reach the 2008-09 Champions League and need a big signing to signal their intent for next season.

Ronaldinho will be expected to lead the Milan line with fellow-Brazilians Kaka and Alexandre Pato.
