The President wants your help to raise $8 million.

This is the target announced by President S R Nathan at the launch of the President's Challenge yesterday at Bedok Reservoir Park. Mr Nathan said he was confident that the sum would be raised.

He noted that 260,000 people stepped forward to support the Challenge last year and said he was sure more would do so this year.

The People's Association (PA) kick-started the event by pledging $250,000, which will be raised from the 84 constituencies.

This year's calendar of events was also released, with at least 26 organisations holding events to support the cause.

The launch was held in conjunction with a PA community event called Walk With A Heart, Paddle With Passion.

Some 6,000 participants joined a walk-a-jog while more than 2,000 competitors took part in 110 dragon-boat and kayak races held over two days.

Government ministers and MPs took part in the PA-CDC President's Challenge Race, comprising six dragon boats.

Five were led by the respective mayors of the five community development council (CDC) districts while the sixth, the PA fleet, was helmed by its chief executive director, Mr Tan Boon Huat.

The proceeds collected in President's Challenge events will go to support 48 beneficiaries.

The event, which was started in 2000, raised just over $12 million last year.

All in, $62 million has been raised.

This year's events will be held from now till the year end with the President's Star Charity show slated to be broadcast on TV on Sept 7.
