Tao Li cool over 15 per cent-levy issue
SHE was the teenager at the centre of the controversy that sparked a public debate and polarised the sports fraternity in Singapore.

But if anyone thought the unpleasant headlines would get under Tao Li's skin, they had better think again.

When cornered by the media pack at last night's Multi Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP) awards ceremony, the 18-year-old displayed commendable courage under fire.

Almost every question focused on her recent spat with the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA), which had imposed a 15 per cent levy on its charges' MAP earnings.

But Tao Li did not flinch.

'I've already spoken to the SSA about the issue and I've agreed to give them the 15 per cent,' said the swimmer, who was clearly eager to close the whole episode.

'After the talk, I can say I'm very glad to be able to contribute back to the association.'

Tao Li's $23,750 cash award made her the top earner at last night's ceremony.

Describing the whole saga with SSA as a 'misunderstanding', she said: 'People thought that I was not willing to give, but that's not the case.'

Any fears that she would get a mixed reception when she received her award were also quickly dispelled.

The spiky-haired teenager was warmly applauded by her fellow athletes and sports officials as she shook hands with Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean.

'There's no reason for me to be unhappy today,' she told The Straits Times, flashing her trademark grin.

'I'm glad to be here to receive my award - so what's not to be happy about?'

As for the $23,750 she received, Tao Li has plans to put it to good use.

'I will give some of the money to my school (Singapore Sports School) to help nurture future generations,' she said.

'My mum, who has always been by my side, will also get a special treat.'
