Cut-off scores for each course
By Jane Ng
FOR the first time, the country's five polytechnics will reveal the cut-off scores for each of their courses, in a move designed to help students better gauge their chances of getting into popular programmes.

The cut-off points can be found on the joint polytechnic website www.polytechnic.edu.sg under the section, A Guide To Polytechnic Education.

It has the cut-off points in last year's intake, which officials hope will serve as a guide for students deciding on polytechnic courses.

Previously, all five polytechnics published a single cutoff score for related courses such as electrical engineering, even though they have different internal standards. The published score was the cut-off point at the easiest polytechnic to get into.

This did not reflect the complete picture, said Singapore Polytechnic registrar Tan Peng Ann.

'Students may think all polys have the same cut-off point and if they choose a poly with a lower cut-off, they won't be able to get into the course.'

He said the website will help students make more informed choices and be more realistic when listing their picks.

Students can choose up to 12 courses and Mr Tan's advice is to select them in order of interest.

If all the choices fall outside the cut-off points, students should make sure their last few choices contain courses with a cut-off they can meet, he said.
