Fandi keen on hit-man Alam Shah
By Wang Meng Meng
BANNED by the Football Association of Singapore, Noh Alam Shah could head for Indonesia and be reunited with an old mentor.

Former national captain Fandi Ahmad, now coach of Indonesian side Pelita Jaya, is considering giving a lifeline to the suspended Tampines Rovers striker.

Fandi had previously worked with the 27-year-old when he was the national assistant coach from 2004 to 2006. He also coached Alam Shah when he was in charge of Singapore Armed Forces FC in 2001.

On Monday, Alam Shah was banned one year for all Football Association of Singapore-sanctioned matches and fined $2,000 for attacking SAFFC defender Daniel Bennett in the Singapore Cup final.

During the match, which Tampines lost 3-4, the striker kneed his international colleague in the face before kicking him in the back.

When contacted, Fandi admitted that he might make a move for Alam Shah.

Said the 45-year-old coach: 'But it will all depend on when the Indonesian league ends.''

According to Fandi, a fixture pile-up in the Indonesian league means he is unsure when to include the forward in his plans for next season.

Pelita, who are currently 11th in the 18-team league, have a history of attracting star strikers.

Although in the twilight of their careers, Argentinian World Cup winner Mario Kempes and Cameroon evergreen Roger Milla both donned Pelita's colours in 1996.

Fandi added: 'At the moment, I don't even know when the Indonesian season is ending. It could stretch as late as next June.

'Once I know when the season finishes, I can plan on bringing Alam Shah over.''

This will be the second time that he is courting the hit-man's services.

In February, he tabled 'an attractive offer' said to be worth more than the $8,000 monthly salary the player draws from the Stags.

Alam Shah turned it down, preferring to stay with Tampines.

But, 10 months on, Fandi's admiration for the Asean Football Championship's Most Valuable Player remains.

During the tournament, the all-action forward top scored with 10 goals. He is also Singapore's leading international scorer with 28 strikes in 63 appearances.

Fandi said: 'Alam Shah will be an asset to Pelita. He has the speed, physical presence and finishing power to be a feared striker.

'He is already very well-known in Indonesia. He will be a good signing for us.''

Alam Shah could not be reached for comment.
