| FANS of radio deejay Rod Monteiro who have missed hearing his voice for the last three weeks can relax.
He will pop up on airwaves again on Monday when he starts a new job at SPH UnionWorks' English station Radio 91.3FM. The 40-year-old left MediaCorp Radio last month after working for six years and presenting on English radio stations Perfect 10, Class 95FM and Gold 90.5FM. Before MediaCorp, he was with Safra Radio's Power 98FM for six years. Monteiro is best known for his wacky - and sometimes controversial - on-air hijinks with fellow MediaCorp radio DJ Glenn Ong. In January 2001, their now-defunct Perfect 10 breakfast show, Five Guys And A Girl, was suspended for two weeks. Parents complained about the show's overtly sexual content, which they thought was inappropriate for an audience made up of mostly teenagers and young adults. Can one expect the same irreverence from Monteiro at his new post? Yes - and no, says the former St Patrick's and Lady of Lourdes student. 'It will be a different way of doing radio and 91.3FM has accepted me in a different light,' he says cryptically, adding that he will be working with a group of 'rookies' with no radio experience. Ms Jeannie Ang, the station's spokesman, will say only that 'his upcoming programmes promise to add more punch to the line-up. It'll be a first of its kind in Singapore'. More will be revealed at a press conference today. 'It hurts me when people come back from the US or Australia and say that radio there is fantastic and Singapore is not happening. I am doing something about that,' says Monteiro, who is married with a five-year-old son. Latest AC Nielsen Radioscope figures show that 91.3FM was the No. 2 choice - after Class 95 - with listeners aged 25 to 44 from March to May this year. The station's current roster includes Jeremy Ratnam, Hubert Tang and Joe Augustine. To find out what Monteiro has in store, tune in on Monday at 5pm. | |
