Ogilvy wins Match Play title

| TUCSON (Arizona) - AUSTRALIAN Geoff Ogilvy defeated England's Paul Casey 4 and 3 Sunday to win the WGC Accenture Match Play title for the second time in four years.
Ogilvy dominated the 36-hole final, taking the lead on the first hole and never relinquishing it. He was 3-up at the lunch break, and 6-up with eight holes to play before finally finishing off the final at the 33rd hole. Ogilvy added the title to his success in 2006, the same year he won the US Open crown. He also reached the final in 2007. The Australian's two titles in the event are second only to the three of Tiger Woods. Ogilvy's most dangerous miscue of the day saw him take a drop when his second shot at 11 nestled in a cactus, but he finished by chipping in for par to win the hole as Casey failed to get up and down from a fairway bunker. Casey, whose match play pedigree includes a solid Ryder Cup record and victory in the 2006 World Match Play Championship, simply couldn't find an answer. 'I made three birdies through those first eight holes this afternoon, and I still lost two holes,' Casey said. 'He just played excellent golf all day. He holed the putts when he needed to. I threw a lot at him, but he didn't flinch.' Owner of nine European Tour titles, including the Abu Dhabi Championship in January, Casey remained without a US PGA Tour win. Ogilvy took a stranglehold on the match when he won the 25th, 26th and 27th holes with a birdie, eagle and par. The 26th - the par-five eighth - was indicative of Casey's whole day. The Englishman reached the green in two, giving himself an eagle chance from about 20 feet. Ogilvy's second shot then rolled within five feet of the flagstick. Casey's arching putt missed by inches and Ogilvy duly nabbed his eagle and the hole. At the next, both were in short rough off the tee. Casey's second shot at the 476-yard par-four ninth found the greenside rough and his chip left him about 10 feet from the hole. He missed it, as Ogilvy two-putted from the fringe for par and a 6-up lead heading into the final nine holes. Casey, who had sensationally holed out from the fairway for eagle at the par-four 10th in the morning, had a chance to win the hole when it came around again but missed a 10-foot birdie attempt and halved. At the 29th - Dove Mountain's 11th where Ogilvy escaped with his bizarre par in the morning - Casey reached the green of the par-four in two and after Ogilvy's chip left him work to do for a par, the Australian conceded the hole to leave Casey 5-down. Casey then shaved another hole off Ogilvy's lead with a birdie at the par-five 13th, the 31st hole of the match, where Ogilvy was in a bunker. They halved the next with pars, and Ogilvy won the match when they halved the 33rd hole with birdies. -- AFP | |
