Two more tainted products
By Tessa Wong
TWO more China-made food products have been found to be tainted with the potentially harmful chemical, melamine, bringing the total number of contaminated items here to 10.

The newly identified products are:

- New Sshmallows Mallow Dippers - Strawberry Flavour

- Silang House of Steamed Potato - Potato and Tomato Cracker

These items are no longer on the shelves as they were removed along with other made-in-China products containing dairy, according to orders issued nearly two weeks ago by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).

Retailers have pulled up to 200 products as a precautionary measure, while the food safety authority is testing over 1,200 food samples to weed out contaminated products.

Singapore is among a dozen countries worldwide affected by a food scandal in China, in which melamine was added to milk to boost protein levels.

It has resulted in four deaths and 53,000 infants falling ill in China, with 10 more children in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau struck with kidney-related illnesses.

The two tainted items just found here have relatively low levels of melamine. The potato and tomato cracker registers as 8.1 parts per million (ppm), and the dippers as 24.8 ppm. An adult weighing 60 kg would have to consume 20 packs of the cracker or 101 cups of the dippers daily over a lifetime to be in any danger; half the amount for a 30kg child.

AVA said it will not hesitate to take enforcement actions against any company which violates the current ban on China-made milk and dairy products.

Meanwhile, supermarket chain Giant has said that it has pulled two items that are not made in China, but which contain China dairy ingredients.

They are Pei Tian Cream Biscuit from Taiwan and Mosn Mosn Grape Juice from Thailand.

Cold Storage has also pulled Swanson Chicken Broth, which is made in Hong Kong.
