The Delhi High Court on Saturday rejected a woman's demand for alimony after a judge said her 80,000-rupee (S$2536) monthly salary was more than that of her ex-husband, court officials said.

Judge S.N. Dhingra struck down a lower court's order granting allowances to the unnamed women after he inspected her latest salary slips.

'A person who is earning this much salary can very well maintain herself with such a standard which may be the envy of many,' Judge Dhingra said, throwing out her demand for a monthly alimony for 7,000 rupees.

Indian law still permits a woman seeking divorce to demand back the dowry given to her husband by her family when they married. -- AFP
