| UNHERALDED Singapore teenager Fu Mingtian notched the first major upset of the Aviva Open Singapore on Wednesday afternoon with a stunning first round win over world No 8 Lu Lan of China in the women's singles.
The 18-year-old qualifier came back from one set down to beat the seventh seeded Lu 8-21, 21-9, 21-19. The China-born Fu, who became a citizen here three years ago, will meet Dutchwoman Judith Meulendijks in the next round. Fu's teammate, Zhang Beiwen, also nearly dumped out another Chinese star. Zhang, 18, came within a whisker of beating world No 4 Wang Lin, before losing 21-10, 18-21, 19-21. | |
