| SINGAPORE'S 90-member contingent for the inaugural Asian Youth Games has been unveiled, with a mix of fresh faces and experienced athletes ready to spearhead the Republic's medal challenge next month.
The contingent - led by chef-de-mission and national shooter Lee Wung Yew - will compete in all nine sports - aquatics, athletics, 3-on-3 basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, football, sailing, shooting and table tennis. The only sport which will not be contested by Singaporeans is diving, a subset of the aquatics competition. The name list was released today by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), following a short meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and SNOC president Teo Chee Hean. Swimming, which has the largest of contingent of 24 athletes, will be led by the likes of Olympians Quah Ting Wen and Lynette Lim, both of whom are already national record holders. Table tennis also boasts established athletes like Isabelle Li, who reached the main draw of the women's doubles at the recent World Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama, while sailing will feature 2007 South-east Asia Games silver-medallist Darren Choy. The list of athletes for sports like basketball, beach volleyball, bowling and football has yet to whittled down, but the respective national sports associations have until May 14 to do so. About 2,200 athletes and officials will be here for the AYG from June 29 to July 7. It is the first multi-sport event Singapore is hosting since the 1993 SEA Games, and is a key test event ahead of next year's Youth Olympic Games. | |
